Turning 30
in Tallinn, Estonia on 14th July, 2012

The beginning of July is always an exciting time for me. The 1st of July is Canada Day followed by my birthday on the 2nd of July.

On the 1st I spent the day out in Nõmme with Triin exploring the various parks, ski jumps and forests. We bought some strawberries at a local market and then ate some lunch at a Georgian restaurant nearby. In the evening I met up with some friends in the Old Town and watched the Euro Cup Final. At midnight we snapped a photo in the pub to remember the moment I turned 30.

The second of July was a Monday. Triin woke me up, I opened some cards and presents, we had a nice breakfast and then we headed to Stroomi beach. The weather was really nice. We found a spot where some bushes were blocking the winds coming off the sea. In the evening I went through around 100 happy birthday messages I'd been sent. It was nice to have so many people acknowledge by birthday but it felt like a denial of service attack after a while :)

On Thursday the 5th I had a BBQ in the Old Town. A friend was kind enough to let me use his courtyard. The party was due to start at 6:30pm, around 5:30pm it started to rain but thankfully it didn't last long. Around 11pm, I went with those who were left to a shesha cafe.

I don't know what to make about turning 30. It's taken me 30 years to get my life into a position where I'm pleased with pretty much everything. I guess it's good that I got to this stage now rather than never.

Growing up, I had a fascination with Gangster Rap Music from California. It struck me how often they referred to not making it to the age of 30 due to the dangers of where they were living. By comparison, I could just sit in my Mom or Dad's houses in Calgary and just focus on my love for computing. I guess that lifestyle kept me out of a lot of trouble.

Life had a lot of obstacles growing up. I knew I'd overcome them but I'm still sort of surprised I did now that I've lived for three decades on this earth. Having strong passions and goals was probably what pushed me through to where I am now. My interests would become obsessions and obsessions luckily had commercial value.
